The Ultimate Skagit Valley Tulip Bike Tour!
We headed out on an early Saturday morning from Seattle and drove to Skagit Valley, where the annual Skagit Valley Tulip Festival was in full bloom. We had seen the tulips before, but had never seen 'em by bike. We met some friends at the Skagit Valley Farmhouse Restaurant, where there is a big back parking lot, and then headed out around 9:30am.
The best part of the day was simply biking from place to place, enjoying the warm sun (rare for an April day in the Pacific Northwest), the snow-capped mountains in the background, and of course, the fields of tulips, daffodils, and irises in the foreground.
First we biked to Tulip Town, and walked around there for a bit, taking pictures and what not. Then we headed for
LaConner Brewing Company, a restaurant that Kaitlin raves about since it makes great homemade root beer (best stuff ever). Beware though: this restaurant gets super busy around lunchtime. We walked around the town of La Conner and got some ice cream, then hopped back on our bikes to see the Roosengarde tulip gardens.
By that time about 2pm in the afternoon, the gardens were packed, with cars lining up for a mile each way, and streams of people crowding around every single flower. If you ever bike or drive around the tulips during the festival, make sure you go early in the day and beat the crowds.
Roosengarde has a whole garden in addition to tulip fields, and in the garden are rows of tulips, all labeled with different names like "Fabio," "Orange Juice," and "Apricot Sunrise."
We biked back to the Farmhouse and then drove out of town, hitting the freeway - and rush hour traffic - by about 3:30pm. If we do this bike trip again, we probably will just skip Tulip Town, since Roosengarde is way better, but was much more crowded and we were too tired to "stop and smell the roses," so to speak. And we would start out at 8:00am, in order to leave around 1:00pm, and avoid the traffic.
