We Kissed Our Apartment Good-Bye

Here we are on closing day, right after we got the keys to our new house!
Three months ago, we kissed our apartment good-bye (I can't believe it's already been 3 months)! We are settling into life in our new home and we can't wait to share with you how we're fixing it up and making it "ours," but first we'd like to look back at the past 4 1/2 years we've spent at our apartment in the Eastlake neighborhood of Seattle. It's been a good place for us, and we'd like to reminisce a bit!

Stay tuned for future posts where we'll share about all our favorite things about our new house.

When we first moved to Eastlake, our friend Caitlin (who also lives in Eastlake nearby) and Kelsey (both friends from SPU) invited us for a boat cruise on Lake Union. 

At our apartment, we got to see some beautiful sunsets looking out over Eastlake Ave and Lake Union.



We also got to go bird-watching around the Cheshiahud Loop trail around Lake Union. We often saw buffleheads, herons, coots, hooded mergansers, even the occasional hawk and eagle. And also there was a resident beaver, which we named Custer.

It was fun to have family visit, including Michaela and Paisley in 2014.

We went kayaking a few times and paddleboarding once on Lake Union. This photo was on Kaitlin's birthday a couple years ago.

Shaun and I celebrated Christmas with small tabletop Christmas trees each year. The tree fit perfectly on the end table, and looked like a full size tree when viewed from the street below :-)

Our cat Kafka really liked it when we got a beautiful chair for him. 


Kafka also helped Shaun through many long days of studying for his Master's degree.
We enjoyed a lot of walks to Lake Union Park, including this walk on Easter a few years ago.



We often walked up the Howe Street Stairs to the Streissguth Gardens, a beautiful hillside garden.

View from Bainbridge Ferry Shaun and I have been trying to enjoy the last bit of summer weather before we go into hibernation for the winter. It always seems like winter comes close on the heels of autumn, so I'm already bracing myself for the shock of cold and rain.  Shaun has a 3-week break between summer and autumn quarter, so we've been taking advantage of it by going on a 1 night backpacking trip to Mt Rainier last weekend, and a short bike trip around Bainbridge Island this weekend. The Mom Diaries, Part 1: New Mom Survival Guide

Now that I'm a "seasoned professional," I'd like to share the baby gear and other tips and tricks that I've learned during my seven-month-long reign as Queen Mom. :-) Much of the advice I learned from my family and friends and others who have been a tremendous help. Europe Trip 2016: Part 2, Paris

by Shaun Day 1 The train dropped us off at the Gare Du Nord , from which we quickly learned how to use the Paris Metro ( may-troh ) to get to our flat in the arrondissement of Montmartre. We set our things down and hiked up an epic set of stairs to the Sacre Coeur, a ivory-colored cathedral keeping watch over the City of Lights. Below the domes and spires of the cathedral crowds from around the world were gathered, as they do nightly, playing music, taking selfies, drinking wine and speaking in French, Italian, Russian, English, Chinese, Somali, etc.... The scene was the love child of The Tower of Babel and It’s a Small World After All. Afterwards, we went to a café and used my survival French to order dinner. The French waiters gave me pointers and seemed to enjoy it.
